Exotic cars, super cars, sports cars, even a Toyota Fortuner! We had a great turnout for our annual Round Table Cannonball Run charity event held on 18-20 September 2020.
Considering recent events, it was hard to imagine that we would be able to host our annual Round Table Cannonball Run project this year. Would people want to join? Is it worth the risk? Will another hard lockdown happen? These were questions that we asked ourselves. We chose to proceed to keep the legacy of our great long-running event intact. And we did so with amazing success!
We had to organize quickly and had a swift response of 24 vehicles entered, a tribute to the great reputation of the event.
We met bright and early at Zwartkops Raceway, where the contestants were greeted with the first task of kitting out their cars with sponsors logos. Contestants were immediately split with co-drivers making their way to Menlyn for karting, and drivers doing a few laps around the track before proceeding to clue and athletic challenges at the Transvaal State Artillery Base. All drivers were then instructed to collect their teammates and head to Hazyview while completing another clue book on the way.
Never knowing where they will end up, the contestants were then directed to the beautiful Sabie River Resort, where they were greeted by great weather and a few sundowners while sharing the day’s war stories before donning their creative attire for the theme party; Mad Max!
On day two the contestants fired up their vehicles (Fortuner included) to participate in a well organised high-speed run, the adrenaline taps were opened! This was followed by a scenic drive through the Panorama Route via Long Tom Pass to Pilgrims Rest, where a few more challenges took place, including a quick stop at Lisbon Falls.
Once back at the Resort, the contestants spent some time at leisure, either getting some well-deserved rest or having a cold one with their new-found friends, before being entertained with live music.
The event ended off with an auction and dinner, bringing the total of funds raised to R80 000 for the weekend.
The Round Table Cannonball Run was once again an incredible experience, and as always, the best memories are those made on the weekend. You just can’t do it justice by putting it into writing. You will have to experience it yourself to understand.
